DEC HEARING: Second hearing, same review
A second round of comments from Niagara County residents produced similar reviews for a proposed statewide hazardous waste siting plan. And this time, the residents who believe the state has wrongfully concluded that New York?s hazardous waste disposal facilities are equally distributed were joined in their fight by a contingent of local elected officials.

NIAGARA FALLS: Williams: Racial tension growing
The chairman of the Niagara Falls Human Rights Commission announced his resignation Thursday while painting a disturbing picture of race relations among the city?s workforce.Rick Williams, who has headed the commission for the past five years, said he is stepping down at the end of November because of personal family issues. His replacement will have the task of investigating what Williams feels is an unbalanced system of disciplining employees who cross the line.

FALLS SCHOOLS: Granto?s departure OK?d
The Niagara Falls Board of Education Thursday unanimously approved Superintendent Carmen Granto?s retirement and the appointment of Deputy Superintendent Cynthia Bianco as his interim replacement beginning Jan. 1. But it wasn?t without first approving a memorandum of agreement to ?avoid any questions and misunderstanding in the future as to the superintendent?s and his spouse?s right to benefits and the board?s approval of those benefits.?

WHEATFIELD: Steve and Barry?s to close at The Summit
After escaping a round of closings earlier this year, the Steve and Barry?s at The Summit mall will be liquidated ? along with the rest of the company?s remaining 173 stores. The discount retailer is reportedly going out of business for good, less than three months after investment firms acquired the chain out of bankruptcy for $168 million.

HEALTH: Almost everybody needs a flu shot in the arm
The Center for Disease Control has also recommended that all children who are six months and older should receive flu vaccines, according to Patricia Fitzpatrick, supervising public health nurse for the Niagara County Health Department. The recommendation comes, she said, not only to protect the children but also to protect the adults and senior citizens around them.

DEC HEARING: Residents say enough is enough
No more. That was the message delivered by a majority of people who spoke during a public hearing Wednesday on proposed guidelines for future hazardous waste operations in New York state.About 60 people attended a hearing at the Niagara Falls Public Library. All but two of the speakers told officials from the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation that the current draft of the agency?s Hazardous Facility Siting Plan contains many flaws and is particularly cruel to residents in Niagara County.

WILSON: No tax increase in town budget
The town board adopted a 2009 budget on Wednesday that calls for zero tax increase for the third straight year, according to Supervisor Joe Jastrzemski.
