Feminism’s challenge: Articulating alternatives to unsustainable hierarchies

Posted by Staff in Untagged

by Robert Jensen

“What is the most important challenge facing women in the 21st century, and why?”

That one isn’t easy for anyone to answer, especially in 300 words or less. But that was the assignment from editors of the University of Texas’ web site for faculty members contributing to the “Many Voices of Feminism” collection, which is online at http://www.utexas.edu/features/2009/03/09/feminisms/.

It is an especially tricky question for a man to try to answer. Rather than pretending to speak for women or for feminism, I wanted to explain why I embraced feminism as a method for analyzing hierarchy that could be useful in all social movements. Although men often treat feminism as a threat, in the 20 years I have been involved in feminist projects I have come to recognize it as a gift to men who want to understand and critique not only gender but other oppressive systems. For me, feminism is a crucial part of the struggle for social justice and sustainability.

Republicans Rant, Rot and Revolt Against Truth

Posted by Staff in Untagged

The slugs are in charge and the leaders of the good for nothing, do nothing Republican Party will do anything they can to obstruct President Obama's determination to change our national course at home and abroad. In the face of numbing job losses - 650,000 more in February - and the unemployment rate climbing to 8.1 percent, the Republicans are squealing about federal spending.

Leadership Skills: The MBA And The Community Organizer

Posted by Staff in Untagged

Barack Obama is showing what it means to lead. He is willing to take risks, reverse wrongs and, above all, make decisions based on what the facts indicate instead of adhering to the blind ideology, partisanship and visceral, vacuous reactions that drove his predecessor's decision making.

The transformation from the presidency of our first president with an MBA degree - from Harvard no less - to a Harvard educated attorney who honed his organizational skills working with community groups on the streets of Chicago is stunning.

Confessions from a non-tech-savvy writer

In the past, you my reader have come to know me as a political op-ed writer or where I write of social issues.  I guess this piece can be a social issue, but not really.  That is for you to judge.

While I am an Internet writer, you would think I am computer savvy, but you would be wrong.  I use this computer as an appliance.  I turn it on and turn it off and in between, I use the various programs in order to answer emails, write pieces on ‘Word’, which almost sounds like ‘The Word’ on the “Colbert Report” and go from site-to-site to gather information.  I am also a huge fan of YouTube.com.

As I read this CNN article which reports where over 1.5 million children here in the United States are homeless due to foreclosures, they are the true victims of greed in this country.

Ellen Bassuk who is the president of  National Center on Family Homelessness stated, “The consequences to our society will play out for decades… As we bail out the rest of our nation, it is also time to come to their aid."

Through the consumerism beast, it has left many of us buying junk from China

As one reads this Newsday Op-Ed piece concerning the death of Fortunoffs which has been a predominant retail force for decades here on Long Island, it is at the end important lessons are learned in order to save failing businesses.

If you are a boomer like me and live within the New York tri-state area, you have witnessed over time, the deaths of Abraham and Strauss, Arnold Constable, Best and Company and other notable stores.  Within these stores and especially Fortunoffs, one could purchase quality goods.  Yes, you paid a higher price-point for what you bought, but these goods were durable and often passed down from family-to-family. Yes, even clothing was passed down from one to another and they were called hand-me-downs.  Try passing down a garment bought at Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target.  Good luck!

Surgeon General pick: President Obama’s sneeze at summit was foreboding

With Dr. Sanjay Gupta taking himself out of the confirmation process to become the next Surgeon General to serve in the Obama administration for personal reasons, I am heartened to see him come to this realization.  We do not need an on-air medical journalist, but an expert in communicable diseases and their affect on a populous that is not protected.

With health care being the pivotal issue being discussed at the health-care-summit presently being held at the White House and where our president sneezed, he said, “See what happens when you do not get enough sleep?” While that helped to relieve the seriousness of this issue through laughs, something within that act was foreboding.

Hospice professionals are the heroes in our midst

A strong and feisty woman who I knew died on Monday night due to cancer.  This woman was a wife, a mom and a grandmother.  Even at her age, she had much to live for and was even ardent Yankee fan.  She is no longer with her beloved family members and they are the ones I am praying for throughout their grieving process and beyond.

This woman I knew is NOT the only victim of this heinous disease as others have succumbed to it and will continue to succumb to its deathly grip.  There are other diseases just as deadly taking the lives of so many innocent victims, yet instead of speaking of them, for them, we speak of Rush Limbaugh.  Well not we in particular, the main stream media does.  Why is he so damn important instead of this woman who only gave her love, advice and the gift of her company?

The war on terror is NWS since our new terror is the economy

As I write this roughly minutes before the opening of the stock market which suffered a blow yesterday and where the Dow plunged by roughly 300 points, this economy is our new war to fight and that means all hands on deck.  Do you hear that Republicans as you chide this administration?  What that does is lessen our resolve as a nation to confront this evil recession that has taken all of us down with it.  Well, maybe not you since most of you look well fed, have a roof over your heads unlike an increasing amount of Americans.

After 9/11, Democrats fully backed former President Bush and this is an event similar to it, yet Republicans think it is patriotic to stand alone and be the party of no.  At this point, political principles and ideologies as one stands in opposition, surely weakens us.  Joining together strengthens us and yes, elections do have consequences and Republicans must bear its consequences.

Be gone, Rush Limbaugh and then chair-dance

On Twitter, someone referred to the group U2 and while a boomer, my response to his Tweet was, “My favorite song has to be Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones. Don't know why, but love it! Gonna listen to it now!” Which I did and yes, chair-danced.

I have never been to a Stone’s concert and much to my regret and yes, their performance of Sympathy for the Devil on their Bridges to Babylon Tour is perhaps one of their greatest productions.
