NBC in inviting Ann Coulter on their network is a lump of coal in our stockings

In keeping with the holiday spirit, Christmas in particular: Do you remember as a child asking Santa Claus for one particular present which was number one on your list?  After all, you stated to him as you sat on his lap that you had been at your best all-year-long.  You stated to him that you had not been naughty during the year and he assured you that under your Christmas tree, a special present would be delivered to you.

For many our Christmas gift came early and that was the decisive victory of President-elect Barack Obama over his Republican challenger, Senator John McCain on Election Day.  The moment it was revealed to all who supported Obama that he was declared president-elect, we said thank you to Santa Claus.

So we assumed that we would not have to put up with miscreants like Ann Coulter during these next four years.  How wrong were we?  Very! It has now been reported by MediaMatters.org that none-other than Ann Coulter is scheduled to be interviewed on January 6, 2009.  I would say instead of a present, this is tantamount to a lump of coal being placed in our stockings. But, that singular piece of coal through this invite grew exponentially.

If someone were to ask me what group of people were my all-time favorites, I would have to say, ‘Little People’ are and it is for this one reason is that they are a self-reliant group of people.  In this big, big world of ours, nothing stands in their way of living life large and to its fullest.  Simply put as a group and individually, they are truly amazing people.

POLONCARZ ISSUES STATEMENT ON FORMER COUNTY PROBATION DIRECTOR

Posted by Staff in Untagged

Dave Cordero: I met George Alexander at Erie County. He was very personable but that was not an excuse for what he is charged with.

As a former 23 yr. Erie County Employee, I had a laptop and desktop computer. I made sure that when I was cut out of the RED/GREEN budget (it was intentional) that my equipment was returned and I got a receipt.

I never trusted anyone in the Giambra Administration still to this day.  It’s too bad that even with a salary of over $100,000 a yr, George Alexander would : "allegedly" take the easy way out.

Comptroller Notes His Office’s Role in Investigation

Erie County Comptroller Mark C. Poloncarz issued the following statement regarding the filing of criminal charges today by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo against George Alexander, former chairman and chief executive officer of the New York State Division of Parole.  Mr. Alexander was the former Director of the Erie County (“County”) Department of Probation (“Probation”), who resigned last week from his state position following the issuance of a New York State Inspector General report that found that he had misappropriated a County computer and engaged in wrongdoing while a senior state employee.

Time To Strike Hoover’s Name Off FBI Headquarters

Posted by Staff in Untagged

Staff

By Sherwood Ross

As sentiment grows to prosecute Vice President Dick Cheney and other designers of the Bush torture policies, it may seem a trifling matter to be concerned over whose name adorns the FBI headquarters building in Washington.

Yet the name J. Edgar Hoover represents a malignant streak of crime and corruption that is the very antithesis of impartial law enforcement,  and if the Obama administration is going to clean house there’s no better time than the present to dump Hoover’s name where it belongs, on the garbage heap of history.
Six years ago, Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.), chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, led a futile charge to expunge Hoover’s name on grounds Hoover “clearly abused his role as director of the FBI”. Burton said, “Symbolism matters in the United States, and it is wrong to honor a man who frequently manipulated the law to achieve his personal goals.”

He described Hoover as “a man who threw everything out the window, including the lives of innocent men, in order to get what he wanted.”  Hoover knowingly put innocent people behind bars, Burton said, referring to the 30 years Joseph Salvati spent in the slammer for a 1968 murder in Boston Hoover knew he didn’t commit.

Among Hoover’s foul deeds were manufacturing lies about people and leaking them to the press, the infiltration of legitimate organizations such as the ACLU, routine criminal breaking-and-entering(black bag) jobs without court warrants, attempts to get the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to commit suicide, bugging of the hotel rooms of King, Eleanor Roosevelt, and others to obtain prurient information, threatening to blackmail presidents, and aggressive attempts to derail the civil rights movement, all documented in Richard Hack’s comprehensive “Puppetmaster: The Secret Life of J. Edgard Hoover”(New Millennium Press).

That Hoover was put in charge of the investigation into the murder of Rev. King is incredible as he must be regarded as one of the prime suspects for King’s assassination. Hoover despised King to the point of madness. Along with a tape recording made from bugging his hotel room, Hoover sent King a letter that called King a “dissolute, abnormal moral imbecile” and warned, “King, like all frauds, your end is approaching.” The letter repeated the phrase “you are done” over and over and urged King to commit suicide: “There is but one way out for you. You better take it before your filthy, abnormal fraudulent self is bared to the nation.” Hoover even sent a copy of a hotel room tape recording to King’s office, where it was read by his wife.

The day after King’s murder, Hoover enjoyed himself at the race track, just as he did on the days immediately following the assassinations of President Kennedy and his brother, Robert, the Democratic Senator from New York. His hatred for RFK, the former Attorney General and his one-time boss, was such that, according to Hack, Hoover timed a press release announcing the capture of James Earl Ray for the King murder to be issued during Kennedy’s funeral!

“Hoover routinely used the U.S. mail to send forged letters and publicity releases aimed at embarrassing the (civil rights) militants and their agenda,” particularly the Black Panthers, Hack writes. Because actress Jean Seberg, star of the 1957 film “Saint Joan,” gave money to the Panthers, Hoover ordered his Los Angeles bureau to inform a Hollywood gossip columnist that she had been made pregnant by a Panther leader. The devastated actress miscarried and committed suicide in 1979. Hoover did his damndest to conflate the civil rights movement with Communism because several leaders had a former Communist on staff. No matter the other half million or so civil rights activists scorned the Kremlin.

With economy in shambles, Congress gets a raise

Posted by Staff in Untagged

With job losses at a two decade high and a slew of bailouts and tax increases on the table, Congress patted themselves on the back and allowed an “automatic” pay increase of $4,700 to each member, which adds another $2.5 million on the shoulders of taxpayers. What is even more ironic is their approval ratings are even lower than Bushs !!

Mr. Ellis believes like the rest of us that Congress should share our pain.

A crumbling economy, more than 2 million constituents who have lost their jobs this year, and congressional demands of CEOs to work for free did not convince lawmakers to freeze their own pay.

Instead, they will get a $4,700 pay increase, amounting to an additional $2.5 million that taxpayers will spend on congressional salaries, and watchdog groups are not happy about it.

Now is not the time for Gov. David Paterson to appoint Caroline Kennedy

Posted by Staff in Untagged

By Mary MacElveen

As a New Yorker whose state is facing an economic meltdown similar to what is being felt in other states such as California and even our own federal government: Who we need right now as a United States senator is someone with immense economic experience and a tough as nails approach in delivering for New York State.  As much as I love the Kennedy family and their contributions to this country, I do not support Caroline Kennedy in being named to fill the senate seat soon to be vacated by Senator Hillary Clinton.

Some within the media have opined that Kennedy is right for this position because she will be able to raise funds needed to run in 2010.  At this point in time, politics needs to take a back seat and in its place is actual governing experience.  Now is not the time to be mentored by anyone as some have said Senator Schumer will be hers.

One name I can think of is Tom Suozzi who is the county executive for Nassau County.  He ran a true reform campaign and won.  Before being elected to that seat, Nassau County, NY was awash in a sea of red thanks to the failed Republican leadership under Tom Gulotta.

In a March, 2000 op-ed piece, the Levittown Tribune reported, “Our county bond rating has been reduced to one notch above junk bond status. This act alone will cost us (the Nassau County taxpayer) millions more in interest payments on money borrowed by the county. It's truly scary to read that Tom Gulotta, county executive and CEO of Nassau County thinks we are in fine shape.” Does that sound familiar?

When elected as county executive back in 2001 and taking over the county in 2002, About.com wrote this of Suozzi’s success in turning things around, “During Tom Suozzi's first term as Nassau County Executive, Nassau County's bond rating was upgraded 10 times. Governing Magazine reports that prior to Suozzi taking office, Nassau County "had amassed nearly $3 billion in debt [and] its bonds were at junk status." They went onto write, “Nassau County has balanced its budget every year since Suozzi became County Executive.”

I ask, isn’t that the experience we need in filling that vacated seat?  Being a county executive brings along with it executive experience.

I am assured that there are other qualified candidates to be named to this seat such as  Carolyn Maloney, who has been one of the great champions of women around the world on issues ranging from sex trafficking to reproductive health.” As reported by Nicholas Kristof in his piece,For senate, Caroline or Carolyn?

Siena Poll: NYers Like Sen. Cuomo, Expect Sen. Kennedy

Posted by Staff in Untagged

Caroline Kennedy staged her listening tour through Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo. She met with the mayors to show her interest in the vacant seat of Hillary Clinton. Of course, Ms. Kennedy empathized this tour was not a campaign for the seat but to familiarize herself with the local leadership.

We tend to agree with the Siena Poll that Paterson will pick Cuomo. This is the only political chess move that makes sense to help Patterson win re-election in 2010. Even if Cuomo is picked and Kennedy decides to challenge him for that seat, he would be too tied up in that race to challenge Paterson for Governership.

If Canadian politics bore you, read no further...

... if you want realpolitic, read on.

The minority Conservative government is in a real pickle. It caused a fall election that no one wanted in the middle of a financial meltdown. For a third time in a row, it failed to achieve a majority in the House of Commons. It might cause a fourth election in five years in the next few months. To do so, it has to get by our Governor General.

The Prime Minister and the GG had a little talk a week or so ago, which lasted over two hours. Here is what they may have had to say:

Mr. Harper: Your Excellency, Parliament has become dysfunctional again. I need you to sign this prorogation order to give my government time to put together a proper budget. If you refuse to suspend Parliament, I must insist that it be dissolved and we have an election.

Ms. Jean: Mr. Harper, you snookered me in September with the election call contrary to your own statements and your own fixed election date law. You lied to me about a “dysfunctional” Parliament. Your legislation was getting passed, in large part by bullying the Liberals with “confidence votes” that were not money bills. It was your party that obstructed committee work investigating your various indiscretions. You even put out a procedures manual on how to do it. Just which party was dysfunctional?
